What are Rational Numbers?
A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction. It can be written in the form of p/q, where p & q are integers & q ≠ 0. Rational numbers can be positive, negative, or zero.
Representing Rational Numbers on the Number Line
Rational numbers can be represented on a number line. They can be plotted by dividing the number line into equal parts. Each part is considered a unit, & the position of the number is determined by the number of units it is away from zero. For example, the number 1/2 is one-half unit away from zero & can be represented on the number line as shown below:
Comparing Rational Numbers
Rational numbers can be compared by converting them into decimals. For example, 1/2 can be written as 0.5, & 3/4 can be written as 0.75. By comparing the decimals, it can be seen that 0.75 is greater than 0.5.
Operations with Rational Numbers
The four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division can be performed with rational numbers.
